Smith writes their section in paragraph form as she alternates between their points of view. She begins with two sisters Tina and Anita as they gossip about being in love. ![]() Smith's title selection Life on Mars balances a plethora of emotions as she describes love, sexual violence, family dynamics, war, amongst other topics in a nine part epic. ![]() She writes, "I didn't want to believe/What we believe in those rooms: That we are blessed, letting go, Letting someone, anyone /Drag open the drapes and heave us/Back into our blinding, bright lives." Her words grow increasingly more poignant throughout this poem as Smith balances her grief with letting go of her emotions, ending with a crescendo of the dynamic between father and daughter. Writing in alternating couplet and paragraph form, Smith's words are so deep that I felt as though I was also mourning a loved one. The first, The Speed of Belief, pays homage to Smith's late father. Three poems stood out in this collection. In poetry that is a mix of free verse, prose, letters, and songs, Smith delivers powerful words in a four part opus. Upon hearing that Tracy K Smith had been named the United States poet laureate for the next year, I decided to read her 2012 Pulitzer winning collection Life on Mars. ![]() For 2017 I have set a goal for myself to read a minimum of twenty Pulitzer winners across all platforms. ![]() ![]() So what of the stories - you have 3 here and they are all standalone (no surprise there really) however they all build on the myths of the Keys, what they are capable of and of the people who understand them. However with Joe Hill at the reigns I suspect we are not going to be in danger of that any time soon. The only concern being is that we are flooded with unrelated and isolated stories simply to exploit what is still in my eyes a unique and fascinating world. For me this opens the world up to so many more possibilities. That said there is plenty of scope for more stories to be told - and as in the case of Grindhouse totally new places to go to. These are all special one offs as the main story has now been concluded in the original run. ![]() ![]() This is a welcome return to Lovecraft County (although I will admit there are other specials out there so I am not sure what the order is). ![]() ![]() Tolkienīook 2 of a new series featuring After worldwide fan-favorite Landon Gibson as he leaves Washington to navigate love and life in New York City. This book was a beautiful journey that took us through ups and downs, was both funny and heartbreaking, and had characters that we'll never forget. This eventually gave him the courage to leave the places where he wasn’t safe and didn’t belong and released him to live more fully “with integrity as a loving presence in the world.” When Pádraig was twenty-five years old, a dream, a sermon, and a National Geographic article led him to enter the very cave he was afraid of and find himself and God there. The damned thing in the cave that was so dreaded becomes the centre.– Joseph Campbell, author of The Hero with a Thousand Faces. ![]() The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you are looking for. ![]() When you stumble, there lies your treasure. To turn from everything to one face is to find one’s self face to face with everything. In his talk “In the Shelter: Finding a Home in the World,” he begins with this quote. The next day, I listened to Pádraig Ó Tuama. It requires staying with yourself and the other person when everything in you wants to flee. Receptive presence requires three things: intention, inner listening, and opening to another. What came up for me as I listened to Tara is how beautifully and easily a receptive presence can turn an experience of irritation and displeasure into an opportunity for love and transformation. Before I had a chance to listen to it, this short video from Tara Brach landed in my inbox. Last week’s Love Mischief led me to a talk by Pádraig Ó Tuama. ![]() ![]() This is why the meditator concludes that the cause(s) of an idea must be more perfect than the idea itself. In contrast, it is truly impossible to imagine a color that does not exist (and is not just a combination of other colors that do). Even the wildest fantasies are just new combinations of things that already exist: for instance, one-legged tie-dye unicorns don’t exist, but the idea of them is made up of ideas about elements that do exist, like legs, colors, horns, and so on. The Meditator isn’t denying that we can imagine fictional things-instead, he’s saying that reality provides the building blocks for our ideas, and we cannot have an idea with more parts than we have building blocks. ![]() ![]() The basic idea here is that the kinds of things that actually exist determine the kinds of ideas we can have it’s impossible to think of a thing that has absolutely nothing to do with reality. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Delivery with Standard Australia Post usually happens within 2-10 business days from time of dispatch. You can track your delivery by going to AusPost tracking and entering your tracking number - your Order Shipped email will contain this information for each parcel.
